Teaching Teens to Tithe

image0022

We are in the process of teaching our young people the importance of tithing.  This might seem a little odd but most of our teenagers have jobs and a “source” of income. Tithing is a biblical command that we all must follow.

A few concepts we are thinking about…

  • Starting small
  • Only asking for what God asks for (going above and beyond will follow later on)
  • Allowing our young people to see how money is used for the kingdom

Do you teach your teens how to tithe?  What are you doing/how are you making that happen?

I can say just how proud I am being able to watch my grown children tithe. Being around people who tithe, watching your parents and grandparents tithe, and seeing how effective titheing is of not only money, but of time and self and your possessions. Titheing, like prayer and faith are active parts of our lives. People don’t like to hear about it, but it is a vital part of any believer’s life.

In the Old Testament they were to gather the tithes into the storehouse. In the New Testament Jesus says that the wheat (Christians) are to be gathered into the barn and the tares are to be bound and burned.

Do you know the law of the tithe where those who exchange tithes for money are to bind the money into their hand? (Deut 14:25) Are those who have the money bound to their hand the ones who are bound as tares in the end as Jesus said?

Doesn’t Malachi 3 and 4 mention those who are to be burned as chaff? It is best to leave the old testament tithe business alone. You may wind up being left behind if you are getting money in this way.

That’s a pretty vague post to come to a conclusion that we are to leave the tithe alone…

I would like to have some dialogue on this if you don’t mind.

It is great that teens support the spread of the Gospel but to teach that a believer in Christ can still be cursed because of a Jewish Old Covenant law is fraud. The New Testament said “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us-Galatians 3:13. He was the fulfillment of the law for us. The fact is that no Gentile was included in any of the Mosaic laws but Gentiles came into a Covenant with God by Faith in Jesus after Jesus died on the Cross then only were Gentiles (not Jewish) grafted in under grace. To preach that God must be paid for what Jesus paid in full for free is stealing the credit that only Jesus deserves from going to the cross for us. Paid in full means just that! He alone died for our blessings and privileges. No New Testament Gentile was commanded to tithe after that. Giving was to be voluntary according to the Apostle Paul in 2nd Corinthian 9:7 as one decides (purposes) in their own heart. To scare people into tithing is dishonoring the work Jesus accomplished on the Cross for free!

Grace is a free gift and Jesus offers it for free for every need and situation in your life this is included as well as Salvation.
Jesus did not say it is finished only 80 percent but he said paid in full. They should teach it right or not at all. Also read Hebrews 8:6 which speaks of a better Covenant than the Old Covenant that was for the Jews (not Gentiles) only!
