Yesterday I felt like I was in the Word, or some type of Bible study preparation all day (except for the two or three games of NBA live ’08 on the 360, but that’s beside the point. Oh and p.s. pastors don’t just sit around all day and read their bible in case you were wondering, “shouldn’t he be doing that everyday?” We have to live out or be doers of the word as well.).
Anyway, while I was studying for our high school core group message, I came across this passage in James talking about the Jewish Christians lacking wisdom. James said, “any of you (the believer) lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But (there’s always a kicker) let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.”
James tells us if we lack wisdom we should ask God. That sounds simple enough to the passive reader until you get to the but part. God gives generously (liberally and without reproach) to his people but it’s only when we step out and ask in faith.
This changes our prayer life immensely. Let me give some examples. While asking God for a raise (which is fine), have faith that God will provide for your needs if that raise doesn’t come. While asking God to heal your sickness (which is fine), have faith that he is in full control through your illness and you will be healed in His prefect time.
When I ask God for something in prayer, there is no doubt in my mind that he is going to come through because I put my faith in Him and Him alone. I’m content with the outcome because I have faith in God. He knows what He’s doing. For once have some confidence in our God who stands unshaken in the storms of our life.
Think about it.

You make a very good point. I think the thing in this passage that strikes me most is verses 6-8…”But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.”
WOW!! If we doubt, we should expect anything. Not only that, but God’s Word states that we are unstable. This is so incredibly true!!! Our life and ministry becomes very unstable when we doubt. May the Lord grant us faith…not just that He will answer our prayers…but give us faith and trust in WHO HE IS!!
