With our country electing a new president tomorrow, I think our politicians missed a big issue we are facing in America. I haven’t heard either side talking about an issue that America needs to address, pornography.
The internet usage among Americans are going up quickly by the day. People everywhere, including youth, are spending massive amounts of time online. As mobile devices like cell phones and ipods offer the internet, our students are spending a lot more time surfing the web.
However, is the internet safe for our young people? Is it safe for us?
It’s hard to say when…
- Every second – $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography
- Every second – 28,258 Internet users are viewing pornography
- Every second – 372 Internet users are typing adult search terms into search engines
- Every 39 minutes: a new pornographic video is being created in the United States
- We have 4.2 million pornographic websites (12% of total websites)
- 420 million pornographic pages
- 68 million daily pornographic search engine requests (25% of total search engine requests)
- 2.5 billion daily pornographic emails (8% of total emails)
- 42.7% of internet users who view porn
- 34% of those online received unwanted exposure to sexual material
- The daily Gnutella “child pornography” requests are 116,000
- There are 100,000 websites offering illegal child pornography
- 89% of sexual solicitations of youth are made in chat rooms
- 1 in 7 teenagers are receiving sexual solicitation
Not enough to see a problem? How about some more troubling news…
- The Average age of first Internet exposure to pornography is 11 years old
- The largest consumer of Internet pornography is the 35 – 49 age group
- 80% of 15-17 year olds having multiple hard-core exposures
- 90% of 8-16 year olds having viewed porn online (most while doing homework)
- 29% of 7-17 year olds who would freely give out home address
- 14% of 7-17 year olds who would freely give out email address
- Plus, children’s character names linked to thousands of porn links 26 (Including Pokemon and Action Man)

This is a big issue and we wonder why marriages fail, the divorce rate continues to go up (in Christian and secular worlds both), and our kids are not embracing healthy lasting relationships. What will the politicians do about this problem? How can we help our young people (and people in general) see dating, marriage, and sex in its proper context?
Do we even care?
