Points of Agreement

Did anyone check out the new Leadership Magazine that just came out?   The front cover over the issue begs the question, “Is our gospel too small?”  In the second section of the discussion, Leadership looked at the ministry of Billy Graham as a young man and asked questions to “big name” pastors about his teachings.  Basically they wanted to know how much has changed over 50 years of preaching the gospel.

While the entire article was a great read, the one thing that really stuck was the points of agreement that all the pastors came to.  Not only are these four areas of preaching consistent in pastors but they are essential in deciding on life in full time ministry.  Consider these four points and see how your life lines up.

  1. A Calling to Preach – All the pastors interviewed for this article believe they have been divinely called to a ministry of proclaiming God’s Word, and their calls have been affirmed by their faith communities.
  2. Passion for God’s Word – All are clearly passionate about communicating the Word of God.
  3. Pastors’ Hearts – Each person evidences a deep love for the people they serve and lead.  All are committed to ministering in the context of community, not as lone rangers relying on their considerable communication gifts.
  4. A Sense of Awe and Responsibility for the Pulpit – Just as athletes talk about “respecting the game,” these leaders all have a high view of the preaching office, which is a great burden and responsibility.

Does your “call” to ministry match these four points?  If your in full time ministry, do you agree with these points?  Are we missing anything?
