Attention youth pastors, parents, pastors, teachers, and anyone who works with, around, or near young people. It seems that there is always something out there that is flying under the radar getting into our communities and effecting our young people. Here is the next dose, check it out.
- What is it? - Salvia divinorum is a plant commonly smoked for its psychoactive effects. This drug has been said that it is the legal version of acid or mushrooms. Salvia divinorum affects the brain and behavior and has been said to be “safe” and non-addictive.
- What is the problem? - Young people (and a lot of college students) use this drug to produce a “divine inebriation”. It’s fast growing popularity masks as spiritual experience instead of a drug. Young people across the country are using this drug as a “link” to God. Also, besides that fact the our young people are now smoking something legally, you’ll also have to worry about people who encourage youth to grow there own plants. Youtube videos are also becoming popular showing people doing the drug and making it seem “cool”. Most states say this drug is alright (Missouri, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Delaware are the only states in the USA that prohibit its use). Young people can also go online to buy the drug commercially or purchase it from head shops in college campuses.
Salvia is a hot button right now and very controversial. It seems to me that this is a stepping stone for other drugs. It also looks to be a education on how to get into the drug world.
Check out a great CBS story and video here.
What do you think?
