Thoughts on Easter

Easter weekend has come and gone. It went by extremely fast this year and was very early. (explanation for the early Easter: Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox (which is March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify Passover, which is why it moves around on the Roman calendar. Based on this information, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March 22) than it will be this year, but that is rare. This year is the earliest Easter any of us will see for the rest of our lives. And only the most elderly (95 years and above) have ever seen it this early. And none of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier.   The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913. The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year..)

Anyway, we did a lot this year for Easter; Egg hunt with the community, Good Friday Service, Bethany’s parents came for a visit, Sunrise Service, and then regular Sunday Easter church. It was a good weekend. I reflected a lot this year. Thought I would share a few.

  • The community loves when the youth helps out. The Easter Egg hunt in town is a huge event with a massive amount of young kids participating. We not only got to interact with the community but the community saw teenagers who care instead of teenagers who just “hang out”.
  • Anything done in public is a great way to get new kids involved, helping out, and active.
  • Real ministry is done outside of an office.
  • People are missing out on Good Friday.
  • Just because a service is small doesn’t mean it was bad or nonspiritual.
  • Sunrise service is early when you have been getting up at the exact same time all week.
  • I applaud people who have a passion to get people moving early in the morning (in regards to worship music). It’s a tough job that is often overlooked. To raise the energy in a non energetic room takes a lot of effort. My hat goes off to people who did that this weekend.
  • Our senior pastor gave three sermons before twelve o’clock at two different locations.  Rock on!
  • It’s amazing how many people show up for Easter Church once a year.
  • Sunday School is getting better.
  • The places that we never thought we would go, end up being better than we anticipated when we get there.

How was your Easter? What did you learn this year?
