How to Maintain Your Vision

So you understand how to cast a vision. You have even heard what people have to say regarding vision and leadership. Now, how do we maintain our vision so ministry is moving forward and things are getting accomplished?

It’s easy to lose sight of a vision when your working over 50 hours a week and juggling everything else on your plate. In order to avoid changing the vision (or losing it), you must maintain the vision cast.

Here are a couple of ways to keep you maintain the vision.

  • Stay With It. Sticking with the original vision is crucial. So many leaders want to change everything when things get tough or a problem happens. Everyone’s not jumping on board right away, stay with it. While some strategies might change and you might have to switch things up a bit from time to time, the vision stays the same. See it through to the end. People will give up the second things get rough, don’t be that person. Keep the vision on top, believe in it, and go back to it repeatedly in the day.
  • Be Strategic. Ask yourself, “What strategy do I have right now to accomplish this vision? Who could I talk to that would provide a possible new strategy that would be helpful or provide new insight? What would be a good strategy to get people on board?”  Use everything possible to get the vision accomplished and be creative.
  • Make the Most of Meetings. Meet with your staff or people who support the vision as much as you can.  It is important to make the most out of every minute that you have. Look at the big picture together. Make sure everyone is on the same page. Meetings are a great time to re-align and re-adjust goals without radically changing them on-the-fly.
  • Make Small Adjustments Not Big Changes. When you make a big change fast, you run the risk of losing the vision or throwing the whole process out of whack.  In coaching baseball the one thing I learned fast is to make small adjustments to my players instead of trying to change everything at one time.  Try to make small adjustments, fine tune things, and see how it goes from there.
  • Keep Your Options Open. Options are always a good thing.  Options build strategy, help make adjustments, and aid in sticking with the vision.  If you can make small changes to your vision and increase your options, then you’re heading in the right direction.
  • Pray, Pray, Pray.  Never, ever, take God out of anything.  Keep Him at the center of your vision.  Push as hard as you can to please Him completely.  Bath everything is prayer.  It is the most powerful too we have to keep our visions going and winning people to the kingdom.

What are you doing to maintain the vision?
