Vision – “A vivid mental image; sight: the ability to see; the perceptual experience of seeing; imagination.“
Why do we have such a hard time casting a vision? Youth pastors, senior pastors, teachers, and mentors all have the ability to see down the road. God called us to this life of leading. In leading there must be a vision for people to follow. How are you going to get people to see what God has shown you? How will you get people closer to God, closer to a relationship with Him, closer to evangelism and discipleship? That requires casting a vision. When someone has a good understanding of Scripture and is following what God is saying, a vision will be cast. Here’s some help on casting a vision.
- Keep it Simple – Casting a vision with a thousand sub points will only get people confused. Working on a simple vision means that you’re trying to get people to see what God has shown you in as few words as possible. Can you say it in three words or less? Would a little kid be able to say it by memory? Keeping the vision simple lets God work out the details. It gives Him the freedom to take people where He wants, not where you want.
- Do your Homework - When you cast a vision it must be well researched, thought through, and prayed about. Talk it over with as many people as possible but be prepared to get a negative response. What God can do and wants to do is beyond what any person can imagine. It scares people to death when we share with them something amazing that God has been showing you or asking you to do. Casting a vision may not be something you can do in a day, months, or year. It may take awhile for people to jump on board.
- Have Faith – Casting a vision requires you to take a risk. Whenever we go out on on a limb with God we must have faith that He will see us through. Your going to take more criticism from Christians, leaders, and denominations than you expected. Keep following what God is telling you, not what people are saying. They might have good feedback but it’s God we are following. It’s His vision we are casting. We’re here to please God, not people. Listen and educate those who don’t see what you see from a biblical perspective. Stretch, learn, and listen. Casting a vision might require you to learn a new skill or do something out of your comfort zone. Have faith and God will see you through
- Be Original – Don’t be another ________. What works for someone in another part of the world might not work where your located. Make sure the vision your casting fits your church and neighborhood. This makes every Vision unique.
What vision are you casting?

right on about “prepare to get a negative response”…people are creatures of habit for sure…the vision may sound crazy, may require people to step out of comfort zones or off the couch, may be risky…but then, if it ain’t risky, what is it?
Good list. I’d add prayer to it, desperately seeking God throughout the process.
Great stuff! My only thought on the be original section is that rather than looking to be original, I would look to what your community needs and go after that be it original or not. One of the things that Jesus and Paul always seemed to be able to understand was the community that he was in and the people he was sharing with.
