I just found out that Cheryl James Wray is a Christian. For those of you who have no idea who she is maybe this will refresh your mind (see picture). I know those of you w
ho are my age were rocking this album back in the day. I mean who could forget songs like “Whatta Man” and “Shoop” that were played at school dances. (My high school kids are like… what is he talking about?) I didn’t know that her decision for Christ lead to the break up of the band.
Let me explain. Christianity Today fell in my lap today. I was reading the article about James on their website. Apparently Wray abandoned her career with the band to become a Christian years ago. Now after ten years after she is now trying to be true to both faith and friendship by reconciling with a member of the group, Denton, in the VH1 reality show called The Salt-N-Pepa Show. She’s 43 years old! How cool is that.
James says she wants to reconcile the relationship with her friend because of her decision to follow Christ. Get this quote from Christianity today. “Some people might be taken aback by Wray’s decision to team up with Denton, an unreformed party girl, but James sees the struggle of finding common ground and rebuilding friendship as compatible with, even necessary to Christian faith.“
Wray said, “There are different kinds of people in the word,” she said. “Christians often want to hide behind the walls of the church, where we are comfortable, but sometimes we have to come out of the box.“
Now if I only had cable…
